Josephina is the feminine form of Joseph, which derives from the Hebrew name Yosef (יוסף), composed of the elements yo (God) and saf (to add or increase). The name's literal meaning is "God will increase" or "may God add." From Hebrew, the name traveled into Greek as Iōsēph, then into Latin as Iosephus. The Latinized form subsequently evolved into the Romance languages: the French form Joseph gave rise to the feminized variant Josephine in the 18th century, which was then adapted into Spanish as Josefina and Italian as Giuseppina. The name entered English-speaking cultures largely through French influence. The diminutive and elaborated forms—Josephina among them—reflect the tendency in European naming traditions to create feminine counterparts to established masculine names through the addition of suffixes such as -a or -ine.
