Joab derives from the Hebrew elements yô (יוֹ), a shortened form of the divine name YHWH, and ab (אב), meaning "father." The name thus literally translates to "Yahweh is father" or "God is father." This theophoric construction is typical of ancient Hebrew naming conventions, in which divine names or titles were combined with familial or descriptive terms to express religious devotion or blessing.
