Tobiah is a Hebrew name derived from the biblical name Tobias, itself rooted in the Hebrew name Toviah (טוביה). The name combines two Hebrew elements: "tov" (טוב), meaning "good," and "yah" (יה), a shortened form of Yahweh, the Hebrew name for God. The literal meaning therefore translates to "God is good" or "the Lord is good." The name entered Greek as Tobias through the Septuagint, the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, and subsequently passed into Latin and other European languages. Tobiah carries deep biblical significance as the anglicized form of a name borne by a righteous figure in the Book of Tobit, a narrative found in Catholic and Orthodox canons. In this apocryphal or deuterocanonical text, Tobias is the son of Tobit and undertakes a perilous journey guided by the archangel Raphael, ultimately restoring his father's sight and marrying Sarah.
