Adoniah derives from Hebrew roots combining "adon" (אָדוֹן), meaning "lord" or "master," and "yah" (יָה), a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh. The literal Hebrew meaning is "My Lord is Yahweh" or "God Is My Lord." This theophoric construction—incorporating the divine name into a personal name—was common in ancient Hebrew naming practices. The name appears in biblical texts as Adonijah, most notably as the name of King David's son who attempted to claim the throne. Over time, anglicized variants emerged, with Adoniah representing a simplified spelling adapted for English speakers.
