Matthew derives from the Hebrew name Mattityahu (מַתִּתְיָהוּ), composed of two elements: "mattah" (מַתָּה), meaning "gift," and "yahu," a shortened form of Yahweh, the Hebrew name for God. Thus the literal meaning is "gift of God" or "gift of Yahweh." The name evolved through Greek as Matthaios (Μαθθαῖος) when the New Testament was written, and subsequently entered Latin as Matthaeus. From Latin, it spread throughout the Romance languages—French (Matthieu), Spanish (Mateo), Italian (Matteo)—and Germanic languages, where English adopted the form Matthew. The spelling variant "Mattew" represents a modern phonetic respelling or simplification of the traditional "Matthew."

Matthew holds profound significance in Christian tradition as the name of one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel accounts, Matthew was a tax collector from Capernaum who was called to discipleship and became an eyewitness to Jesus's ministry. He is traditionally credited with authoring the Gospel of Matthew, one of the four canonical gospels, which emphasizes Jesus's teachings and messianic fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Matthew's representation in Christian art—often depicted with a winged human figure or angel—reflects his role as an evangelist. His feast day is celebrated on September 21 in Western Christianity and November 16 in Eastern Christianity.
