Matteo is the Italian form of Matthew, derived from the Hebrew name Mattityahu (מתתיהו), composed of two elements: "mattat" (gift) and "Yahu" (a shortened form of Yahweh, the Hebrew name for God). The literal meaning is therefore "gift of God." The name evolved from Hebrew to Greek as Matthaios (Ματθαῖος), then to Latin as Matthaeus, and finally into the Romance languages as Matteo in Italian, Mateo in Spanish, Mathieu in French, and Matthew in English. This widespread linguistic journey reflects the name's prominence throughout Christian Europe following the early Church's expansion.

Matteo carries significant biblical importance as the name of one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of Matthew. According to Christian tradition, Matthew was a tax collector in Capernaum who left his profession to follow Jesus. He is venerated as a saint in Christianity and is often depicted in art with symbols of his former trade or as a winged human figure in the four evangelists iconography. His feast day is celebrated on September 21 in the Western Church and November 16 in the Eastern Church. The name's association with this apostolic figure and New Testament authority has ensured its continuous use across Catholic and Christian communities for nearly two millennia, making it one of the most enduring names in Western civilization.
