The story behind Yocheved

Yocheved derives from Hebrew, composed of two elements: *Yo-* (a shortened form of the divine name YHWH, "God") and *-cheved*, from the root *kavod* meaning "glory" or "honor." The name thus literally translates to "God is her glory" or "Glory of God." In Hebrew orthography, it appears as יוֹכֶבֶד. The name has ancient roots in Jewish tradition and appears in biblical texts. Over centuries, various transliterations and romanizations emerged across different Jewish diaspora communities, including Yokheved, Yochevet, and Jochebed (the anglicized form used in English biblical translations).

Yocheved holds profound historical and religious significance as the name of Moses's mother in Jewish tradition. According to the Book of Exodus, Yocheved was a Levite woman who gave birth to Moses during the Egyptian bondage and played a crucial role in his survival by placing him in a basket on the Nile to escape Pharaoh's decree. She is also the mother of Aaron and Miriam. In Jewish texts and rabbinic literature, Yocheved is revered as a matriarch of exceptional faith and courage. The name became especially prominent in Jewish communities throughout the medieval and early modern periods, and it has remained a traditional choice among observant Jewish families. In recent decades, particularly from the 2000s onward, it has experienced modest revival in English-speaking Jewish communities as parents have sought to reconnect with biblical and Hebrew naming traditions.
