The story behind Vishnu

Vishnu derives from Sanskrit, one of the earliest recorded Indo-European languages. The name originates from the Sanskrit root meaning "to pervade" or "to spread," which evolved into the nominal form Vishnu, interpreted as "the sustainer" or "the preserver." In Hindu philosophical and etymological texts, the name is understood to encompass the concept of pervasiveness—the divine quality of being omnipresent and all-encompassing. The name has remained relatively unchanged across classical Sanskrit, Modern Hindi, and other Indic languages, maintaining its core form and spiritual significance throughout centuries of linguistic development.

In Hindu tradition, Vishnu is one of the principal deities of the Trimurti (the trinity), alongside Brahma and Shiva. Vishnu is revered as the cosmic sustainer and preserver of the universe, credited with maintaining dharma (cosmic order and righteousness) and restoring balance when chaos threatens creation. Hindu mythology attributes to Vishnu ten major incarnations, or avatars, including Rama and Krishna, two of the most widely worshipped figures in Hindu practice. Worship of Vishnu dates back to the Rigveda, Hinduism's oldest sacred texts, where he appears as an important deity. The name Vishnu has been borne by countless devotees throughout Hindu history and continues to be selected as a given name by Hindu families globally, particularly gaining prevalence in Western contexts during the late twentieth century.
