Vedant derives from Sanskrit, composed of two elements: "Veda," referring to the ancient sacred texts of Hinduism, and "ant," meaning "one who possesses" or "one who knows." The literal translation is therefore "one who knows the Vedas." The name emerges from classical Sanskrit usage and reflects the high value placed on Vedic knowledge within Hindu philosophical and religious traditions. The Vedas themselves—the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda—are among the oldest sacred literature in Hinduism, composed between roughly 1500 and 500 BCE. The suffix "-ant" is a productive Sanskrit masculine ending used to form agent nouns, as in "vedant" (knower of Vedas), making it a grammatically transparent construction within the language. The name has remained consistent in its form and meaning throughout Sanskrit literature and into modern Hindi and other Indo-Aryan languages.

Vedant does not correspond to a specific historical or mythological figure in Hindu tradition, but rather represents a descriptor of scholarly or spiritual attainment.
