Themis derives from ancient Greek Θέμις (Themis), likely connected to the root "thē-" meaning "to place" or "to set," from which the noun "thema" (θέμα) develops, meaning "that which is laid down" or "ordinance." The name thus carries the literal sense of "divine law" or "divine order" — referring to established precepts and cosmic principles rather than mutable human rules. In ancient Greek philosophy and theology, this root concept underlay the notion of fixed, immutable natural and divine order. The name was transmitted through Classical Greek literature and remained relatively rare in English-speaking countries until the 19th century, when Greco-Roman names experienced renewed scholarly and cultural interest.

Themis holds profound significance in classical mythology as one of the Titanesses and a goddess of justice, divine order, and prophecy in Greek religion. She is typically depicted holding the scales of justice and is closely associated with moral law and righteous judgment. Ancient sources including Hesiod's Theogony identify her as a daughter of Uranus and Gaia, and she became an important figure in the Olympian pantheon. Her oracle at Delphi preceded Apollo's, and she was venerated as the keeper of divine will.
