Simone derives from the Hebrew name Simeon (שמעון), composed of the root "shama" (שמע), meaning "to hear," and the suffix "-on," yielding the literal meaning "God hears" or "He has heard." The name appears in the Hebrew Bible as the name of one of Jacob's sons and the founder of the Simeonite tribe. As Christianity spread, the name traveled westward through Greek (Symeon) and Latin (Simeon) forms. During the medieval period, particularly in France and Italy, Simeon was feminized into Simone, following Romance language conventions for adapting masculine names to feminine forms. The Italian and French versions gained traction throughout the medieval and Renaissance periods, eventually becoming established as independent feminine given names distinct from their masculine counterparts.

In Christian tradition, Saint Simeon the God-Receiver (also called Simeon the Elder) was a righteous man who recognized Jesus as the Messiah at the Presentation in the Temple, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The name also connects to Simon Peter, one of Jesus's twelve apostles, whose Aramaic name was also rendered as Simeon in Greek.
