Shaine is a modern Irish variant of Shane, which itself derives from the Irish name Seán, the Irish form of the English name John. Seán originates from the Hebrew name Yohanan, meaning "God is gracious" or "the Lord is merciful." The name traveled from Hebrew into Greek as Ioannes, then into Latin as Ioannes, and eventually into English as John. The Irish adapted this widespread European name to their language and phonetic system as Seán during the medieval period, particularly following the Norman invasion of Ireland. Shane represents an anglicized phonetic spelling of Seán that emerged in English-speaking contexts. Shaine takes this anglicization further, adding an additional vowel to create a distinctly modern spelling variation that became popular in the late twentieth century.

Shaine has no historical bearer of its own, as it is fundamentally a 20th-century spelling innovation rather than a name with independent historical roots.
