Reuben derives from the Hebrew name ראובן (Re'uven), composed of two elements: *re'u*, meaning "behold" or "see," and *ben*, meaning "son." The literal meaning is therefore "behold a son." The name appears in its Hebrew form throughout the Old Testament and was preserved in Greek as Ρουβήν (Rhoubēn) and in Latin as Ruben. As Hebrew names spread into European languages through biblical translation and Christian tradition, the name evolved into various forms: English Reuben, German Ruben, French Rubén, and others. Reuben holds significant biblical importance as the name of the eldest son of Jacob and Leah in the Book of Genesis.
