Remie is a contemporary shortened form or respelling of Rémi (or Remy), which derives from the Latin name Remigius. Remigius itself comes from the Latin root "remex," meaning "oarsman" or "rower," though it was later reinterpreted as connected to "remigare" (to row) and sometimes understood through folk etymology as related to concepts of guidance or leadership. The name traveled through French and English-speaking regions, where it became established in classical usage. Modern variants like Remy and Remie represent 21st-century informal adaptations, with Remie emerging as a distinctly contemporary spelling choice that gained visibility in the 2010s.

Remie has no historical bearer of classical significance; it is a modern coinage rather than a traditionally inherited name. The underlying name Rémi/Remy, however, carries historical weight through Saint Remigius (c. 438–533), a bishop of Reims credited with baptizing the Frankish king Clovis I. The association with Reims—the French city where the coronation cathedral stands and where Remigius served—contributed to the name's prestige in French culture.
