Morganne is a modern respelling and feminization of the Welsh name Morgan, which derives from the Old Welsh elements "mor" (sea) and "gan" (born), originally meaning "born of the sea." The name Morgan has ancient Celtic roots and was borne by legendary and historical figures in Welsh tradition. The addition of the feminine suffix "-anne" (or "-anna") reflects late 20th-century English-language naming conventions, where traditionally masculine or unisex names were feminized by adding -e, -a, or -anne endings. This practice became especially common in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s.

Morganne has no historical or mythological bearer of its own, as it is a 21st-century coinage.
