Mike is a diminutive form of Michael, which derives from the Hebrew name Mikha'el (מִיכָאֵל), composed of two elements: "mi" (who), "ka" (like), and "el" (God). The literal meaning is therefore "Who is like God?" This rhetorical question functioned as a declaration of God's incomparability in Hebrew tradition. The name traveled through Greek as Michaēl (Μιχαήλ), then into Latin as Michael, and subsequently into the Romance languages and Germanic tongues. As European languages evolved during the medieval and early modern periods, various diminutive forms emerged naturally from Michael—including Mike in English, Michel in French, Mikel in Basque, and Mika in Finnish. The English short form "Mike" became standardized through informal usage, gaining particular prominence in American English by the 19th and 20th centuries.
