Marketa is the Czech form of Margaret, a name with roots in ancient Greek. It derives from the Greek name Margarites (Μαργαριτης), which comes from margaros, meaning "pearl." The name traveled westward through Latin as Margarita, preserving the pearl etymology. As the name spread across medieval Europe, it developed regional variants in virtually every language: Margaret in English, Margot in French, Margarida in Portuguese, and Marketa in Czech. The Czech form emerged as the Slavic adaptation of the Latin and Germanic versions, maintaining both the connection to the Greek root and the cultural significance of the pearl symbolism across Catholic and Orthodox Christian traditions.
