Khaleesi is a modern coinage created for the HBO fantasy series "Game of Thrones," which debuted in 2011. The name does not derive from an actual historical language or linguistic tradition. Instead, it was invented by the show's creators as part of the constructed Dothraki language developed by linguist David J. Peterson. In Dothraki, "khaleesi" functions as a title rather than a personal name, meaning "queen" or "female ruler"—derived from "khal" (a military commander or leader) with a feminized suffix. The term gained widespread recognition through the character Daenerys Targaryen, who becomes a khaleesi through her marriage to Khal Drogo. Although the show is rooted in a fantasy setting rather than Middle Eastern history, Dothraki was designed with phonetic and structural elements that evoke various real-world languages, including Slavic and Caucasian tongues.

Since its introduction to popular culture, Khaleesi has become increasingly used as an actual given name for children, particularly in English-speaking countries.
