Jilian is a modern feminine variant of Julian, which derives from the Latin name Julianus, itself based on Julius. The root Julius comes from the Latin *ioulos*, meaning "youthful" or "downy-bearded," referring to the softness of youth. The name was historically borne by members of the aristocratic gens Iulia in ancient Rome, and Julianus became the Latinized form used across the Roman Empire. As Romance languages evolved, Julian and its variants spread throughout Europe—becoming Julien in French, Julián in Spanish, and Giuliano in Italian. The spelling Jilian appears to be a distinctly modern English adaptation, emerging in the late 20th century as part of a broader trend toward creative feminine respellings of masculine names, particularly with the substitution of -ian endings for -ius or -ien.

Jilian has no historical figure or mythological bearer of its own, as it is essentially a contemporary coinage rather than a name with ancient roots. However, it inherits cultural associations through its connection to the Julian name family, which includes historical figures such as the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate (331–363 CE) and various Christian saints.
