The story behind Jesus

Jesus derives from the Hebrew name Yeshua (ישוע), itself a shortened form of Yehoshua, meaning "God is salvation" or "the Lord is salvation." The name combines the Hebrew elements yah (יה), a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh, and shua (שוע), meaning "to save" or "deliverance." When Yeshua was transliterated into Greek during the Hellenistic period, it became Iesous (Ἰησοῦς), which was then Latinized as Jesus. This transformation occurred as Jewish communities increasingly used Greek, particularly in the Septuagint (Greek translation of Hebrew scriptures) and in the earliest Christian texts. The name retained its theological significance through each linguistic evolution, with the core meaning of divine salvation preserved across Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

In Christian tradition, Jesus is the given name of Jesus Christ (Jesus of Nazareth), the central figure of Christianity believed by Christians to be the Son of God and the Messiah. He was born in first-century Roman-occupied Judea and became the founder of Christianity through his teachings and crucifixion. The Gospels record him by this name, and it has been venerated for nearly two thousand years throughout Christian communities worldwide. The name gained particular prominence in Spanish-speaking cultures during the colonial period and beyond, becoming a common given name especially across Latin America.
