The story behind Jabez

Jabez derives from the Hebrew name יַעְבֵּץ (Ya'abetz), whose etymology relates to the Hebrew word עצב (atzav), meaning "pain" or "sorrow." The name literally translates to "he causes pain" or "born in pain." This etymology is directly attested in the Hebrew Bible itself, in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, where the name's meaning is explicitly explained through wordplay: "And Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow." The name entered English usage through biblical translation, particularly via the King James Version and subsequent Protestant Bibles, where the Hebrew form was transliterated into the English version "Jabez."

Jabez is primarily known as a biblical figure of the tribe of Judah, mentioned in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles. Although his appearance in scripture is brief, he gained theological significance through his prayer recorded in verse 10: "Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me; and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!" His petition for divine blessing despite his inauspicious name made him a symbol of faith and perseverance in Christian tradition. The name experienced notable popularity in 19th-century America, particularly among Protestant communities drawn to biblical nomenclature, reaching its peak usage during the 1880s.
