Izaya is a modern respelling of the biblical name Isaiah, derived from the Hebrew name Yeshayahu (ישׁעיהו). The name's etymology combines two Hebrew elements: "yesha" (ישׁע), meaning "salvation" or "deliverance," and "yahu," a shortened form of Yahweh, the Hebrew name of God. Thus, the name literally translates to "God saves" or "God is salvation." The form "Isaiah" entered English through Greek and Latin transliterations of the Hebrew original, while "Izaya" represents a contemporary phonetic respelling that emerged in late 20th-century American naming practices, particularly within African American communities seeking distinctive orthographic variations of biblical names.

Izaya references the biblical Prophet Isaiah, one of the major prophets of the Hebrew Bible whose book comprises 66 chapters of prophecy, poetry, and theological vision.
