Huldah derives from the Hebrew root חלד (ḥld), which carries the meaning "weasel" or "mole," animals associated with hiding and burrowing beneath the surface. The name appears in its Hebrew form in biblical texts and carries the semantic weight of something concealed or mysterious—qualities that align with the nature of the creatures from which it takes its name. The name remained relatively stable across Hebrew-speaking communities, maintaining its connection to the animal world rather than evolving into an abstract or metaphorical form as many Hebrew names did. Its adoption in English and other European languages came primarily through biblical translation and transliteration, preserving the original form with minimal phonetic alteration.

Huldah holds significant biblical importance as the name of a prophetess in the Hebrew scriptures. According to 2 Kings 22 and 2 Chronicles 34, Huldah was consulted by King Josiah's officials regarding a newly discovered book of the law during the temple's restoration. Her prophetic pronouncement proved influential in validating religious reforms of the Judean monarchy. As one of the few named female prophets in the Hebrew Bible—alongside Miriam, Deborah, and Esther—Huldah represented spiritual authority and divine wisdom.
