Giovanni is the Italian form of the Hebrew name Yochanan, derived from the elements *yah* (God) and *chanan* (to show grace or favor), literally meaning "God is gracious." The name entered European languages through Greek *Ioannes*, used throughout early Christian communities for the apostle and evangelist John. From Greek, the name traveled into Latin as *Johannes*, which became the parent form for most Romance languages: Italian Giovanni, Spanish Juan, French Jean, Portuguese João, and Romanian Ioan.
