Gertrue derives from Old Germanic roots combining *ger- (spear) and *trud- (strength, force). The name emerged in medieval Germanic-speaking regions as a feminine form blending martial and personal strength imagery. Related to the Old High German elements gēr and trūd, it evolved into various Romance and Germanic language forms. By the medieval period, the name appeared across German-speaking territories and eventually entered English usage. The variant spelling Gertrude became the more common Anglicized form, though Gertrue represents an alternative orthographic tradition, particularly in German contexts.

The name gained particular prominence through Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (626–659), an abbess in the Low Countries venerated for her spiritual authority and mystical writings.
