Fortunata derives from the Latin adjective *fortunatus*, meaning "fortunate" or "lucky," stemming from the noun *fortuna*, which referred to chance, fate, or good fortune in Roman thought. The feminine form *fortunata* was adopted as a given name, following the Roman practice of converting virtue words and abstract concepts into personal names. The name traveled through Romance languages as European populations adopted Latin-derived naming conventions during the medieval and early modern periods. In Italian, it remained *Fortunata*; in Spanish and Portuguese, similar forms persisted. The name eventually entered English-speaking regions, where it appeared sporadically from the nineteenth century onward, gaining modest popularity in the United States around the 1900s before declining through the twentieth century.

Fortunata was borne by Saint Fortunata, an early Christian martyr venerated in the Catholic tradition. According to hagiographic accounts, she was among the virgin martyrs of the early Church, lending the name both religious authority and virtue-laden associations. The connection to Saint Fortunata, combined with the name's transparent meaning of good fortune and luck, made it attractive to parents seeking to confer blessings of prosperity on their daughters. While never reaching the popularity of names like Mary or Catherine, Fortunata retained cultural currency in Italian and Catholic communities well into the twentieth century, serving as a direct invocation of positive destiny and divine favor.
