Filomena derives from the Greek name Philomela, composed of the elements *philos* (lover of) and *melos* (song, music). The name originated in ancient Greek mythology and evolved significantly as it traveled through languages and cultures. In Latin, the form became Philomena, and from there it underwent Romance-language adaptations. The Italian form Filomena represents the natural phonetic evolution of the Latin name through Italian linguistic development, where the Greek "ph" softened to "f" and the name acquired its characteristic Italian ending. The name entered various European languages through this same classical route: Spanish (Filomena), Portuguese (Filomena), French (Philomène), and others.
