The story behind Elkanah

Elkanah is a Hebrew name composed of two elements: *el*, meaning "God," and *kanah*, meaning "to be jealous" or "to be zealous." The name thus carries the literal sense of "God is jealous" or "God is zealous." This compound structure follows a common pattern in biblical Hebrew naming, where divine attributes are expressed through combinations of the word *el* (God) with verbs or adjectives describing divine qualities. The name appears in its original Hebrew form in ancient biblical texts and has been transmitted through Anglicization and transliteration into English and other European languages, maintaining its recognizable form across centuries of Jewish and Christian tradition.

In biblical tradition, Elkanah is most notably known as the father of the prophet Samuel in the First Book of Samuel. Elkanah was a devout Levite living in the hill country of Ephraim during the period of the judges in ancient Israel. He had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah; though Peninnah bore him children, Hannah was his favored wife. According to biblical narrative, Hannah's prayers for a son were answered with the birth of Samuel, who became one of Israel's most significant prophets and judges. This biblical association has sustained the name within Jewish and Christian communities for over two thousand years, making it a name rooted in scriptural history rather than modern invention.
