Efrain is the Spanish form of Ephraim, which derives from the Hebrew name אֶפְרַיִם (Ephrayim). The Hebrew root carries the meaning "fruitful" or "doubly fruitful," combining the elements that convey abundance and fertility. The name traveled through biblical and post-biblical traditions into Greek as Ephraím (Ἐφραίμ), then into Latin as Ephraim, and subsequently into Romance languages including Spanish, where it became Efrain. This evolution reflects the widespread Christian transmission of biblical names throughout Europe and the Americas. The shift from the Greek and Latin forms to the Spanish version involved both phonetic simplification and orthographic adaptation to Spanish conventions, making the name accessible and pronounceable within Spanish-speaking communities.

Efrain carries significant biblical weight as the name of one of the two sons of Joseph in the Old Testament.
