Coletta is a French diminutive of the name Nicole, which derives from the Greek name Nikolaos (Νικόλαος). The Greek name is composed of two elements: nike, meaning "victory," and laos, meaning "people." Thus Nikolaos literally translates to "victory of the people." As the name traveled westward through Roman Christendom, it was Latinized to Nicolaus and eventually evolved into Romance language variants. In French, Nicole emerged as the feminine form, and Coletta developed as an affectionate diminutive, adding the French suffix -etta to create a smaller or more intimate version of the name. Coletta gained particular prominence through Saint Coletta of Corbie (1381–1447), a French mystic and reformer of the Poor Clare convent in Corbie, Picardy. Her canonization in 1807 further elevated the name's religious significance.
