Claudetta is a diminutive derivative of the Latin name Claudia, which originates from the Roman family name Claudius. Claudius derives from the Latin adjective "claudus," meaning "lame" or "limping." Despite this unflattering literal etymology, the Claudian family was one of Rome's most prominent patrician clans, and the name carried considerable prestige throughout the Roman Empire. The feminine form Claudia became widespread among Roman women, and the suffix "-etta" (from Italian diminutive traditions) was later applied to create the smaller, more intimate form Claudetta.
