The story behind Christ

Christ derives from the Greek word Christós (Χριστός), meaning "anointed one" or "anointed." This Greek term is itself a translation of the Hebrew Mashiach (משיח), which carries the same core meaning. The Hebrew root relates to the practice of anointing with oil, a ritual used to consecrate kings, priests, and other figures of religious or political significance in ancient Israel. The Greek form emerged during the Hellenistic period and became the standard term in early Christian communities. As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire and beyond, the name was adopted and adapted across European languages—becoming Cristo in Spanish and Italian, Christ in English and German, and Christus in Latin theological texts.

Christ became inextricably linked to Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity, whom followers believed to be the long-awaited Messiah. In Christian theology, "Christ" functions both as a title (the Anointed One) and as part of his name. While Christ initially served primarily as a theological designation rather than a personal name, it gradually entered usage as a given name, particularly among Christian populations. The name gained notable popularity in English-speaking countries during the Victorian era, with peak usage in the 1880s. Though less common than derivatives like Christopher or Christian, Christ has been used as a given name to express deep religious devotion or conviction.
