Carollee is an American coinage of the mid-twentieth century, formed by combining the traditional feminine name Carol with the suffix Lee. Carol itself derives from the Germanic root *karl- (man, person), which evolved into Old High German *Karl* and subsequently became associated with feminine names through Romance-language variants like Italian *Carla* and French *Carole*. The suffix Lee—originally an Old English topographic element meaning "clearing" or "meadow"—became fashionable in American naming during the 1920s–1950s as a way to create distinctive feminine given names by appending it to established name stems.
