Araminta is believed to derive from Hebrew roots relating to exaltation and elevation. The name carries connotations of nobility and loftiness, though its exact etymological path remains somewhat obscure in scholarly literature. Some etymologists propose connections to Aramaic and Greek elements, suggesting a construction that emphasizes the elevated or superior state. The name emerged into English usage during the early modern period, gaining particular traction in English-speaking communities by the 18th century. Its precise component parts and their original meanings have become somewhat diffuse through centuries of transmission across languages and cultural contexts, yet the association with grandeur and distinction has persisted throughout its history.

Araminta gained historical prominence through its bearer Araminta Ross (c. 1820–1913), known to history as Harriet Tubman, the renowned abolitionist and conductor of the Underground Railroad. Born enslaved in Maryland, Tubman escaped to freedom and became one of the most celebrated figures in American history, leading numerous enslaved people to liberation. The name itself, however, did not originate with Tubman; it was used by her family as part of their cultural heritage. Araminta's popularity in America peaked during the late 19th century, reflecting both its association with distinguished historical figures and its melodious, dignified sound that appealed to Victorian-era sensibilities.
