Alyssha is a modern respelling of Alyssa, which derives from the Greek name Alicia or Alice. These names trace back to the Germanic element "adal," meaning "noble" or "of noble birth," which evolved into Old German "Adelheid" (later Adelheidis). Through Norman French, this became "Alice" in English, ultimately producing the Latinate form "Alicia." The shift to "Alyssa" represents a 20th-century feminization and phonetic variation, while "Alyssha" adds an additional layer of spelling variation characteristic of late 20th-century naming trends.

Alyssha has no historical or biblical bearer. It emerged as a modern coinage, part of a broader trend in the 1980s–1990s of creating alternative spellings for established names. The variant gained modest popularity in the United States during the 1990s, driven by contemporary preferences for distinctive orthography.
