Algot is a Scandinavian name with roots in Old Norse, derived from the elements "algi" (relating to protection or possession) and "goti" (good, or potentially linked to the Goths). The name emerged in medieval Scandinavia, particularly in Sweden, where it appeared in royal genealogies and noble families. The compound structure reflects common Old Norse naming patterns, in which two meaningful elements were joined to create names with auspicious or protective implications. Over time, Algot remained most firmly rooted in Swedish tradition, though it was occasionally encountered in other Nordic regions.

Algot gained particular historical prominence through Saint Algot (or Algotus), a 12th-century Swedish saint and hermit associated with spiritual devotion and asceticism.
